Ouzoud Waterfalls rank as one of Morocco’s most majestic natural attractions. Located amidst the scenic Middle Atlas Mountains, these waterfalls present a breathtaking escape where nature, fresh air, and relaxation come to greet you in welcome reprieve from city life. Where Exactly Are the Ouzoud Waterfalls Located?

The waterfalls are located in Azilal Province, in Morocco’s Middle Atlas region. They are about 150 kilometers northeast of Marrakech and therefore roughly 2.5 to 3 hours’ drive, depending on traffic and mode of transport.

This is the perfect distance for a day trip from Marrakech. The route passes through quaint countryside, little Berber villages, and winding mountain roads with spectacular views. The journey is truly an experience unto itself and offers a view of another world in Morocco outside the city.

If you are confused and do not understand Moroccan geography, Ouzoud lies closer to Azilal town and High Atlas mountains yet is still accessible from Marrakech, the country’s tourist hub of pleasure.

How to Reach Ouzoud Waterfalls from Marrakech

By Car or Rental

Having lived for a while in Marrakech, I must say that renting a car is probably the easiest and most flexible way to get to Ouzoud. The drive will take anything from 2.5 to 3 hours. One will head along the N8 menuju Beni Mellal, enjoying the very scenic countryside and lots of tiny towns along the way. Having a car by your own means you can stop and check out a couple of local villages, or linger a bit longer at the falls if you want to soak in the experiences.

For finding a reputable car rental service, I recommend that you try and book your car through sites. We rented from Marrakech directly, and the vehicles that we were given were in good condition for those mountain roads.

By Guided Tour

Many guided day trips to Ouzoud from Marrakech are available if you do not like driving on unfamiliar roads. They may provide hotel pickup and drop-off, a local guide, and sometimes a meal. I had been on several such tours and found them quite convenient, especially if you just want to relax and soak in the scenery.

One of my favorite tours is this inexpensive Ouzoud Waterfalls day trip, where, along with a bit of hiking around the falls, you enjoy a traditional lunch. Since these tours fill up quickly, I suggest booking early here.

By Public Transport

Public transportation is possible but less straightforward. From Marrakech, you would first catch a bus or grand taxi to Azilal, then get a local taxi to the falls. This takes longer and is less convenient, especially if you are on a tight seal or carrying luggage.

What to Expect When You Arrive at Ouzoud Waterfalls

The plunging height from the falls is something around 110 meters, making it one of the highest in North Africa. The roar of the cascading water with the surrounding greenery brings about a serene confining.

There are several staircases one can hike down to get closer to the base of the falls. Along the trails are local vendors set up to sell snacks, drinks, and various souvenirs. If you are lucky, you will see wild monkeys – the Barbary macaques in the area are fairly friendly but do not feed them!

For lunch, I suppose I would highly recommend stopping at one of the terrace cafés overlooking the falls. We had fresh tagine and mint tea while absorbing the view. Otherwise, you could have your picnic in the designated areas.

For the more adventurous, boat rides take you right under the falls, which is nicely refreshing on hot days.

Places to Stay Near Ouzoud Waterfalls

Most visitors do it in one day; spending a night nearby ensures that you can enjoy the magical sunrise and sunset by the waterfalls, which are usually less crowded.

There are few lovely guest houses and smaller hotels around the vicinity. I stayed at a riad-like guest house, which closed with warm ambiance and wonderful hospitality.

Practical Tips to Plan Your Trip From Marrakech
  • Early start: By around midday, the waterfalls get pretty crowded; leave Marrakech early for a peaceful exploring time.
  • Wear comfortable shoes: The hike down to the falls involves steps and uneven terrain.
  • Bring a bottle of water and snacks: Though vendors will be there, it never hurts to be prepared.
  • Camera ready: The scenery will leave one awestruck!
  • Respect the environment: Please keep this place beautiful by disposing of your trash properly.
Final Thoughts: Why Ouzoud Waterfalls Are the Ticket to a Perfect Marrakech Escape

Having lived in Marrakech and made so many trips to Ouzoud, I can say with confidence that it is a site all must see if one truly wants to experience Morocco beyond the city walls in nature. Given its manageable distance of just about 150 km from Marrakech, it makes for a rewarding day trip or one-night getaway.

Whether you drive yourself, join a guided tour, or brave public transport, the trip to Ouzoud is as memorable as the destination itself. Sitting by the falls, breathing in the mountain air, and experiencing the hospitality of the villages close by makes for an unforgettable escape from city life.
