Hiking Morocco

When to hike in Morocco

When to Hike in Morocco

Hikes aren’t decisions made on impulse. Just like any other decisions you make in life, no matter how big or small, pondering on it is a must for a reason.

One of the key things you need to consider before you embark on a hike in Morocco is to determine the perfect timing to do it. It is simply because trekking at the right time will ensure not only enjoyment but most importantly, your safety.

The specific region where you wish to go and your preferred conditions will help you determine when you should give the hike a green light.

Hiking in the High Atlas Mountains

Considered as the most excellent time to go climbing in the High Atlas Mountains is during spring season from the months of May through June. During this period, you will enjoy a generally mild weather that is in stark contrast to the snow-capped summits and the wildflowers in full bloom. Snow no longer covers the trails so you can expect to hike easier.  When to hike in Morocco?

Summer that runs from July to August is considered as the peak season for hiking because of the stable weather conditions and warm temperatures. But lower elevations tend to have extremely high temperatures so it is recommended that you start your trek as early as possible.

Higher elevations tend to be cooler, making them a great choice for climbing. Just keep in mind, though, that tourists may flock to the area during this time of the year so make sure you book your accommodations ahead of time.

Autumn from September to October sees smaller crowds and cooler temperatures. This is also a great time for a hike because of the still pleasant weather, with the trails free from snow as well.

The High Atlas is covered in snow during winter from the months of November to April, specifically in areas at higher elevations. Even though this will give you stunning landscapes with the beauty of winter all around you, the hike itself also becomes trickier, which requires more experience and equipment. Hiking in winter also requires you to hire a guide and use ice axes and crampons for added safety.

Hiking in the Anti-Atlas Mountains

If you’re eyeing to hike the Anti-Atlas Mountains, the most ideal time to do so is during spring from March to May. Mild weather combined with the vibrant flora make for an amazing trek. The season is also perfect if you wish to enjoy off-the-beaten trails and simply take in the verdant greenery all around.

The Anti-Atlas tends to get quite hot during summer, even more so in lower elevations. But you will find the higher trails more bearable and accessible as well. But since the heat may get intense, it is imperative to protect yourself from the sun and stay hydrated at all times.

Autumn is also a pleasant time to hike because of the smaller crowds of tourists and the cooler temperatures. The season offers ideal trekking conditions where you can witness as the landscape changes colors.

Weather during winter may differ, with the higher elevations getting potential snowfall and cooler temperatures. Navigating certain trails may also get trickier so you have to be ready. It is also advisable to hire a guide.
