Variables That Can Make or Break Your Mount Toubkal Climb

It’s not a secret that there’s some challenges involved when climbing any peak, and Mount Toubkal is no exception. This only means that this isn’t something you should take lightly.

Of course, if it’s any consolation, you’re guaranteed that this risk does come with an amazing reward in the form of an out of this world experience of seeing the High Atlas Mountains. And if you’re lucky, it might even lead to more exciting climbing adventures soon!

But hey, before you get too psyched and put on your hiking boots, there are several factors that will help you determine whether or not you can climb this mountain even if you’re a complete newbie.

  • Your Fitness Level

Toubkal’s peak is non-technical, which means wannabe climbers don’t have to be total experts. However, your fitness level should still good, combined with your thirst for adventure.

Simply put, you can have more fun during your trek if you’re fitter and you’re well-trained before the actual hike. Thus, you have to ensure that you train properly before you set foot on Mount Toubkal. This training includes going on hikes on steep inclines and hills and scheduling these on consecutive days.

  • Your Equipment

Technical gear is not necessary to reach the summit of this North African mountain if you happen to be there during summer. But if your hike has been scheduled on a winter day, it’s a must to have ice axes and crampons since snow in the area tends to settle above 3,000m. Only experienced climbers are recommended to trek on the mountain during winter conditions.

For summer hikes, make sure you got the right kit with you. Put on your worn-in walking boots, more layers, and waterproof clothing. Since temperatures tend to drop during nighttime, don’t forget your sleeping bag, either.

  • Altitude

Climbing the peak of the highest mountain of North Africa means you need to walk and sleep at altitude. It just means that there is always the possibility that you will be experiencing altitude sickness. You might experience some mild symptoms, including lack of appetite, headache, and nausea.

Walking slowly and scheduling rests as often as possible will help you adjust better to this change in altitude. Also, see to it that you drink lots of water during your ascent.
