Experience the Sahara far beyond the usual desert excursion on an unforgettable 6-day camel trekking adventure from Marrakech to Erg Chegaga. This immersive journey takes you deep into the remote landscapes of southern Morocco, combining trekking, camel support, traditional desert camping and spectacular Saharan scenery.

Your adventure begins by crossing the High Atlas Mountains and Tizi n’Tichka Pass, continuing through Ouarzazate and the lush Draa Valley before reaching Zagora. Here, you meet the camel team and begin your trek towards the remote landscapes surrounding Jebel Bani.

Over the following days, trek through rocky plateaus, mountain passes, dry riverbeds and hidden oases, gradually leaving the familiar landscapes behind as the first stretches of sand appear. Spend your nights in remote camps, enjoy traditional meals and experience the extraordinary silence of the desert beneath a sky filled with stars.

The highlight of the journey is reaching the spectacular Erg Chegaga dunes, one of Morocco's most impressive and remote dune regions. Trek into the vast sea of golden sand, climb the dunes for panoramic views and watch the desert transform beneath the setting sun.

Wake early the following morning for sunrise before continuing through the remote Draa Valley towards the Bougarne Dunes.

This is a genuine Sahara trekking experience, designed for adventurous travellers who want to explore Morocco's desert on foot rather than simply visit it by vehicle. With local guides, a camel team, meals, camping and transportation included, the journey offers an authentic way to experience the wild beauty of the Moroccan Sahara.

Tour Plan

Day 1: Marrakech – High Atlas – Zagora – Jebel Bani

Your desert adventure begins early in the morning. After breakfast at your riad, depart Marrakech by minibus and travel southeast towards the High Atlas Mountains.

Cross the spectacular Tizi n’Tichka Pass, enjoying panoramic views of rugged peaks, fertile valleys and traditional Amazigh villages built into the mountainsides.

Continue through Ouarzazate, often known as the “Hollywood of Morocco,” before crossing the Ait Saouné Pass and descending into the lush Drâa Valley, famous for its vast palm groves and traditional settlements.

Arrive in Zagora, the gateway to the Sahara, where you can purchase a traditional chèche— the desert scarf worn by local nomads—and enjoy a final refreshment before heading deeper into the wilderness. Here, you will meet your camel team and begin your first trek towards the foothills of Jebel Bani. As the day comes to an end, your team will set up camp in the desert, surrounded by the silence and vastness of southern Morocco.

Driving: Approx. 7 hours / 400 km
Overnight: Desert camp

Day 2: Jebel Bani – Faija Plateau – Desert Oasis

Wake early to breakfast as the camel team prepares for the day’s journey.

Set off on foot and ascend a dramatic gorge through Jebel Bani, crossing a mountain pass before emerging onto the vast, rocky Faija Plateau.

Take a well-earned break for lunch beneath the shade of tamarisk and acacia trees before continuing your trek in the afternoon.

Follow the edge of the striking Saghro Mountains, gradually making your way towards a secluded desert oasis hidden among the arid landscapes. Tall date palms provide a welcome contrast to the surrounding wilderness. Once at the oasis, settle into camp and take time to explore the area or help gather firewood for the evening. As darkness falls, enjoy dinner in the camp before relaxing beneath a spectacular canopy of desert stars.

Walking: Approx. 6–7 hours
Overnight: Desert camp

Day 3: Dry Riverbeds and the First Sands

Today’s trek takes you along a dry riverbed, providing relatively gentle walking through a fascinating landscape of rugged mountains, rock formations and open desert.

As you venture deeper into the valley, the terrain gradually changes from rocky ground and gravel to softer sand—the first signs that you are approaching the great Sahara dunes. Arrive at your campsite in the early afternoon, leaving plenty of time to relax and enjoy the surroundings.

For those who would like to explore further, an optional hike to the ridge of Jbel Abbes offers broader views across the surrounding desert and distant horizons.

As night falls, you can choose to sleep beneath the open sky, offering an unforgettable opportunity to gaze up at the Milky Way in the exceptionally clear desert darkness.

Walking: Approx. 4–5 hours
Overnight:
Desert camp

Day 4: The Great Dunes of Erg Chegaga

Today is one of the most spectacular and challenging stages of the trek.

Leave the valley behind and cross a vast rocky plateau, passing over the El Abbes Pass. As you reach higher ground, the landscape begins to transform and the immense Erg Chegaga dunes gradually appear on the horizon.

Following ancient nomadic trails, continue across the desert and stop beneath the shade of an acacia tree for lunch.

As the afternoon progresses, leave the rocky terrain behind and enter the soft, rolling dunes of Erg Chegaga. Walk deeper into this extraordinary “ocean of sand” until you reach your desert camp in the heart of the dunes.

As the sun begins to set, climb one of the higher dunes for spectacular panoramic views and an unforgettable desert sunset.

Return to camp for a traditional evening around the campfire, sharing stories beneath the stars.

Walking: Approx. 6 hours
Overnight: Desert camp in Erg Chegaga

Day 5: Erg Chegaga – Bougarne Dunes

Rise early and climb to the crest of the dunes to witness the sunrise over Erg Chegaga. After breakfast, continue your trek eastwards towards M’Hamid.

Today’s stage takes you through the wide Drâa Valley, where walking across the deep sand makes for a more demanding but rewarding experience.

Stop beneath tamarisk trees for lunch and to refill your water supplies before continuing towards the remote Bougarne Dunes. Far from the main tourist routes, this rarely visited area offers a genuine sense of wilderness and solitude. Set up camp at the foot of one of the area’s largest dunes and enjoy your final night in the Sahara.

Celebrate the end of your desert trekking adventure with a traditional evening of Moroccan music, drums and campfire atmosphere beneath the stars.

Walking: Approx. 7 hours
Overnight:
Desert camp at Bougarne Dunes

Day 6: Sahara – Ouarzazate – Marrakech

After a final breakfast with your camel team, say goodbye to the desert crew before boarding 4WD vehicles for the journey across the desert plateau towards the main road.

Meet your minibus and begin the return journey through the Drâa Valley, travelling north towards the High Atlas Mountains.

Enjoy lunch along the way before crossing the spectacular High Atlas and descending towards Marrakech. Arrive back at your riad in the late afternoon, where you can enjoy a well-deserved shower and relax after an extraordinary six-day journey through the remote landscapes of southern Morocco.
