Our Toubkal winter climb is the mountain under snow: five days from Imlil, climbing Ras n’Ouanoukrim and Mount Toubkal from the refuge, with crampons and an ice axe where conditions call for them. Some previous winter trekking or mountaineering experience is recommended. This challenging adventure combines winter mountain skills, high-altitude trekking and two major summits, including

Mount Toubkal at 4,167 metres, the highest peak in Morocco and North Africa.

The adventure begins with a transfer from Marrakech to Imlil, where you have time to explore the mountain village and prepare any winter equipment you may need. The following day, trek through the Aït Mizane Valley, passing the Sidi Chamharouch Shrine before climbing towards the Toubkal Refuge at 3,207m.

After acclimatizing at the refuge, take on Ras n’Ouanoukrim at 4,068m, Toubkal’s neighbouring summit and the second-highest peak in the Atlas Mountains. The route includes the impressive Tizi n’Ouagane Pass, with spectacular views across the surrounding valleys.

The main challenge comes on Day 4 with the Mount Toubkal summit ascent. The winter route crosses mixed terrain of snow, ice and rock before reaching Tizi n’Toubkal at 3,940m and continuing along the southwest ridge to the summit. After enjoying the incredible High Atlas panorama, descend to the refuge for the night.

The final day follows the valley back to Imlil before the transfer to Marrakech. This itinerary offers an immersive winter mountain experience for adventurous trekkers looking to develop winter skills while climbing two of the High Atlas's highest peaks.

Other ways up Toubkal: the 2-day trek, the quickest way up, the classic 3-day trek with two refuge nights, the 4-day trek with an acclimatisation hike, the 5-day long route via Azzaden and Tizi Oussem, the 6-day circuit via Lake Ifni, the 4-day Berber villages trek, the 3-day ascent via the Azzaden valley and Tamsoult or the 5-day climb of Toubkal and Ouanoukrim. Tour Plan

Day 1: Marrakech – Imlil Valley

Your adventure begins with a morning pickup from your accommodation in Marrakech and a scenic transfer south towards the High Atlas Mountains. As the city gives way to increasingly dramatic mountain landscapes, we make our way to Imlil (1,740m), the gateway to Mount Toubkal.

After settling into a comfortable local lodge and enjoying lunch, we take a relaxed afternoon walk around the village and its surrounding trails. This is also the opportunity to check and collect any trekking or rental equipment you may need before beginning the ascent.

Walking: Approximately 2 hours
Transfer: Approximately 1.5 hours
Overnight: Imlil

Day 2: Imlil – Sidi Chamharouch – Toubkal Refuge

After breakfast, we set off on foot through the beautiful Aït Mizane Valley, following a steadily rising trail towards the high mountains. Along the way, we pass traditional Berber villages and terraced fields before reaching Sidi Chamharouch, a small mountain settlement and renowned pilgrimage site set dramatically beside the river.

From here, the trail becomes more rugged as we continue deeper into the Isougouane Valley.

Surrounded by towering peaks, we eventually reach the Toubkal Refuge (3,207m), located beneath the impressive western face of Mount Toubkal.

After arriving at the refuge, there is time to rest and enjoy the spectacular mountain surroundings.

Walking: Approximately 5–6 hours
Overnight: Toubkal Refuge

Day 3: Toubkal Refuge – Ras n’Ouanoukrim – Toubkal Refuge

Following an early breakfast, we begin our ascent towards Ras n’Ouanoukrim (4,068m), one of the highest summits in the Atlas Mountains and a spectacular neighbour of Mount Toubkal.

The trail climbs through the upper Isougouane Valley towards Tizi n’Ouagane, a dramatic mountain pass offering impressive views into the neighbouring valleys. From the pass, the route continues towards the summit, with increasingly expansive views across the High Atlas.

After enjoying the summit and its exceptional mountain panorama, we descend by the same route to the Toubkal Refuge, where we spend a second night.

Walking: Approximately 6 hours
Overnight: Toubkal Refuge

Day 4: Toubkal Refuge – Mount Toubkal Summit – Toubkal Refuge

Today is the highlight of the trek: the ascent of Mount Toubkal (4,167m).

We set off early, following the trail into the upper mountain terrain. Depending on the season and conditions, the route may cross a mixture of rocky ground, snow and ice as we ascend towards Tizi n’Toubkal (3,940m).

From the col, we continue along the southwestern ridge, gradually gaining height. As we climb, dramatic views open across the surrounding peaks, including the impressive southeastern face of Toubkal. Finally, we reach the summit at 4,167m, the highest point in Morocco and North Africa.

At the summit, we take time to appreciate the extraordinary panoramic views stretching across the High Atlas and beyond before beginning our descent to the refuge.

After lunch and a well-earned rest, we spend our final night at the refuge.

Walking: Approximately 6–7 hours
Overnight: Toubkal Refuge

Day 5: Toubkal Refuge – Imlil – Marrakech

After breakfast, we begin our final descent through the Aït Mizane Valley, retracing the trail

towards Imlil. The route offers a more relaxed pace after the summit day, with plenty of opportunities to enjoy the changing mountain scenery and reflect on the journey.

Once back in Imlil, we stop for lunch before meeting our driver for the return journey to Marrakech.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Toubkal Winter Climb suitable for beginners?

The winter ascent of Mount Toubkal is more challenging than the summer trek because of snow, ice, cold temperatures and changing mountain conditions. Previous winter trekking or mountaineering experience is recommended, together with a good level of fitness. A professional local guide will accompany you throughout the climb.

What equipment do I need for the Toubkal Winter Climb?

You should be properly equipped for winter mountain conditions. Essential equipment may include crampons, an ice axe, waterproof hiking boots, warm and layered clothing, gloves, a hat, sunglasses or goggles, and a waterproof jacket. Your guide can advise you on the appropriate equipment based on current snow and weather conditions.

Do I need experience using crampons and an ice axe?

Winter conditions can require the use of crampons and an ice axe, particularly on steeper or icy sections of the route. If you have little or no experience with this equipment, discuss it with the trekking company before booking so they can assess whether the itinerary is suitable and provide appropriate guidance.

How difficult is climbing Mount Toubkal in winter?

The winter climb is physically demanding and requires more preparation than a summer ascent. Snow, ice, cold temperatures, altitude and potentially difficult weather can make the climb more challenging. You should be comfortable with long days of mountain hiking and be prepared for conditions at elevations above 3,000 metres.

What happens if the weather conditions are too dangerous to reach the summit?

Mountain safety comes first. If heavy snow, strong winds, poor visibility, ice or other conditions make the summit unsafe, the guide may modify or stop the ascent. The final decision should always be based on the current mountain conditions and the safety of the group.
