The adventure begins in Imlil, the gateway to the Toubkal region, before crossing Tizi n’Tamatert towards Tacheddirt. From there, the trail climbs to the impressive Tizi n’Likemt Pass at around 3,550m, offering magnificent views across the surrounding mountains.
Continuing south, the trek passes through remote mountain landscapes and traditional Berber villages before reaching Amsouzert. One of the major highlights is Lake Ifni, Morocco’s highest mountain lake, where you can relax beside the water surrounded by rugged Atlas peaks.
The route then climbs towards Tizi Ouanoums at around 3,670m before descending to the Toubkal Refuge. On the final day, set off early for the summit of Mount Toubkal at 4,167m. After enjoying panoramic views across the Atlas Mountains and beyond, descend via Sidi Chamharouch and Aremd to Imlil before returning to Marrakech.
With six days of trekking, remote mountain scenery, cultural encounters and a challenging summit ascent, the Toubkal Circuit Trek offers a complete High Atlas adventure for experienced and adventurous hikers.
Tour Plan
Day 1: Marrakech – Imlil – Tacheddirt
After breakfast, depart Marrakech and travel towards the High Atlas Mountains, passing through the town of Asni before reaching Imlil, one of Morocco’s most important mountain villages and a principal gateway to the Toubkal region.
Imlil is a lively mountain hub, where trekkers, muleteers and local villagers converge before setting out into the surrounding valleys. Here, you will meet your mule team and load your trekking equipment before beginning the journey on foot.
Follow the valley beyond Imlil as the trail gradually climbs towards Tizi n’Tamatert Pass, at approximately 2,279 metres. From the pass, enjoy sweeping views across the surrounding valleys and peaks before beginning the descent towards the picturesque village of Ouaneskra.
Continue along the valley for another 30 minutes or so until reaching Tacheddirt, a peaceful traditional Berber village surrounded by impressive mountain scenery. Your camp will be set up near the river, where you can relax and enjoy your first evening in the High Atlas.

Day 2: Tacheddirt – Tizi n'Likemt (3,550m) – Azib n'Likemt
After breakfast, begin one of the more demanding climbs of the trek as you ascend towards Tizi n’Likemt, at approximately 3,550 metres.
The trail climbs steadily through increasingly rugged mountain terrain, taking around three and a half hours to reach the pass. Once at the summit of Tizi n’Likemt, take time to rest and admire the magnificent panorama over the Tacheddirt Valley and the surrounding High Atlas peaks.
From the pass, begin a gradual descent through the high mountain landscape. Stop along the way for a picnic lunch before continuing towards your overnight camp.
After another hour or so of walking, arrive at Azib n’Likemt, a remote mountain pasture where nomadic shepherds can often be seen tending their goats and sheep.
Enjoy a peaceful evening surrounded by the wild landscapes of the High Atlas.

Day 3: Azib n'Likemt – Tizi Ourai (3,109m) – Amsouzarte
Today’s trek takes you from the high mountain pastures towards the southern slopes of the High Atlas.
Begin with a steady ascent towards Tizi Ourai, at approximately 3,109 metres. From the pass, the trail begins its descent towards the Tinzar Valley, where you will stop for lunch and enjoy the changing scenery.
As you descend, the rugged high-altitude landscape gradually gives way to traditional Berber villages and terraced fields. Take time to appreciate the distinctive architecture and everyday mountain life of the communities that have lived in these valleys for generations. Continue across the High Atlas towards the southern side of the range until you reach Amsouzarte, situated at approximately 1,740 metres.
Settle into a traditional Berber lodge and enjoy a well-earned evening in the village.

Day 4: Amsouzarte – Imhilene – Lake Ifni (2,295m)
After breakfast, leave Amsouzarte and continue through the beautiful Islani Valley. The route takes you through traditional villages including Ibrouane, Tisgouane and Takatert, offering an authentic glimpse into life on the southern side of the High Atlas.
As the trail climbs gradually, the landscape becomes increasingly dramatic until you reach Lake Ifni, at approximately 2,295 metres.
Nestled at the foot of the great Toubkal massif and surrounded by rugged mountain peaks, Lake Ifni is one of the most striking natural landmarks in the region.
After reaching the lake, settle into camp and enjoy a peaceful evening beside its tranquil waters. As night falls, the remote setting offers an unforgettable mountain experience beneath the clear High Atlas skies.

Overnight: Camp at Lake Ifni
Day 5: Lake Ifni – Tizi Ouanoums (3,670m) – Toubkal Refuge (3,207m)
Today’s stage takes you into the high alpine heart of the Toubkal massif.
After breakfast, begin a steady ascent towards Tizi Ouanoums, at approximately 3,670 metres. The climb is challenging but rewarding, with increasingly spectacular views across the surrounding peaks and valleys.
Upon reaching the pass, pause to enjoy the extraordinary mountain panorama, including views towards several of the High Atlas peaks rising above 4,000 metres.
From Tizi Ouanoums, descend towards the Toubkal Refuge, situated at approximately 3,207 metres. This is a well-known meeting point for trekkers preparing for their Mount Toubkal summit attempts.
Arrive at the refuge area, settle into your camp and enjoy dinner before an early night in preparation for tomorrow’s summit ascent.

Day 6: Toubkal Refuge – Mount Toubkal Summit (4,167m) – Imlil – Marrakech
The final day begins early as you set out for the summit of Jbel Toubkal, rising to 4,167 metres and standing as the highest peak in North Africa. The ascent takes you through rugged high-altitude terrain, with spectacular views unfolding across the Toubkal massif and the surrounding valleys as you gain elevation.
After reaching the summit, take time to celebrate your achievement and enjoy the extraordinary panorama from the highest point in the Maghreb. On clear days, the views stretch across the High Atlas and towards the vast landscapes of southern Morocco.
After enjoying the summit, begin your descent back towards the refuge, where you can stop for lunch and take a well-earned rest.
Continue downhill through the Aït Mizane Valley towards Imlil, the main gateway to the Toubkal region. Here, your vehicle will be waiting to take you back to Marrakech.
Arrive in Marrakech later in the day, bringing your six-day journey through the High Atlas Mountains to a memorable conclusion.
