This Toubkal Azzaden Valley trek takes a different way up from the usual Imlil path: over the Tizi Mzik pass to the Tamsoult refuge, then across Tizi n’Aguelzim (about 3,550m) to the Toubkal Refuge, gaining height over two days before the summit. This scenic route combines high mountain passes, remote valleys, dramatic waterfalls and a challenging ascent of Mount Toubkal at 4,167 metres, the highest peak in Morocco and North Africa.

Your adventure begins with a transfer from Marrakech to Imlil, the starting point of the trek. From Imlil, hike over Tizi Mzik Pass, enjoying panoramic views across the Imlil Valley and surrounding peaks, before continuing to Azib Tamsoult Refuge. Along the way, discover the impressive Tamsoult waterfalls, among the highlights of this mountain route.

On Day 2, continue towards the Toubkal Refuge via the spectacular Tizi n’Auguelzim Pass at around 3,550m. From this high pass, enjoy impressive views of Mount Toubkal and the surrounding 4,000-metre peaks before descending towards the refuge at 3,207m.

The final day is dedicated to the Toubkal summit ascent. After an early start, climb through rugged high-altitude terrain to the summit at 4,167m. Take time to enjoy the breathtaking High Atlas panoramas before descending to the refuge, continuing to Imlil and transferring back to Marrakech.

With a combination of scenic passes, remote mountain landscapes and a memorable summit climb, this itinerary offers an adventurous way to experience the High Atlas and Mount Toubkal in just three days.

Tour Plan

Day 1: Marrakech – Imlil – Tizi Mzik Pass – Tamsoult Refuge

Your Mount Toubkal adventure begins with a morning pick-up from your accommodation in Marrakech. Travel south towards the western High Atlas Mountains, passing through the scenic Oued Ghighaya Valley and Asni, with beautiful views of traditional mountain villages and terraced landscapes along the way.

Continue to Imlil, one of Morocco’s most famous mountain villages and a principal starting point for treks in the High Atlas, located approximately 65 km south of Marrakech.

Upon arrival, meet your local guide and muleteer team before beginning your trek. The trail climbs steadily towards Tizi Mzik Pass, at approximately 2,684 metres. As you gain altitude, enjoy spectacular views across the Imlil Valley, with the impressive summit of Mount Toubkal visible among the surrounding peaks.

After crossing the pass, continue towards Tamsoult, where you will stop for lunch and take some time to enjoy the peaceful mountain surroundings.

In the afternoon, make a short excursion to the spectacular Tamsoult waterfalls, among the highest waterfalls in the Atlas Mountains, cascading approximately 100 metres down the rugged mountainside.

Return to the Tamsoult Refuge for dinner and an overnight stay, surrounded by the dramatic scenery of the High Atlas.

Trekking: Approximately 5 hours
Overnight: Tamsoult Refuge

Day 2: Tamsoult Refuge – Tizi Aguelzim Pass (3,550m) – Toubkal Refuge (3,207m)

After breakfast, set out on one of the most challenging stages of the trek as you head eastwards towards the high mountain pass of Tizi Aguelzim, at approximately 3,550 metres. The trail follows winding mule tracks and climbs steadily through increasingly rugged terrain. As you gain altitude, the lower valleys gradually disappear behind you and the landscape takes on a distinctly alpine character.

Reaching Tizi Aguelzim is a rewarding moment, with impressive panoramic views across the surrounding High Atlas peaks and valleys.

From the pass, continue south-eastwards through the high mountain landscape towards the Toubkal Refuge, situated at approximately 3,207 metres.

The descent towards the refuge takes around three hours. Upon arrival, settle in and enjoy a well-earned dinner before resting for the night. The refuge is an important base for trekkers preparing for their Mount Toubkal summit ascent.

Trekking: Approximately 7 hours
Overnight: Toubkal Refuge

Day 3: Toubkal Refuge – Mount Toubkal Summit (4,167m) – Imlil – Marrakech

Begin the final and most rewarding day with an early start for the summit of Jbel Toubkal, rising to 4,167 metres and standing as the highest peak in North Africa.

From the refuge, the trail climbs through the southern cirque, crossing the mountain stream before continuing across rugged scree and rocky terrain. The ascent is technically straightforward in normal conditions, although the loose ground and high altitude make it physically demanding.

As you climb higher, the surrounding landscape becomes increasingly spectacular. The vast panorama opens across the High Atlas, with rugged peaks, deep valleys and distant landscapes stretching in every direction.

Upon reaching the summit of Mount Toubkal at 4,167 metres, take time to celebrate your achievement and enjoy the breathtaking views from the highest point in North Africa.

After spending some time at the summit, begin the descent by retracing your steps back towards the Toubkal Refuge. Continue downhill through the Aït Mizane Valley towards Imlil, enjoying a final look at the landscapes you have crossed during your adventure.

Once you reach Imlil, meet your driver for the return journey to Marrakech.

Arrive in Marrakech later in the day, bringing your three-day Mount Toubkal adventure to a memorable conclusion.

Frequently asked questions

How difficult is the 3-day Toubkal Ascent?

The trek is challenging because of the high altitude, steep sections and long walking days, especially on the summit day. The itinerary includes several high passes, including Tizi n’Auguelzim at around 3,550–3,600m, before reaching the 4,167m summit.

What is the itinerary for the 3-day Toubkal Ascent?

The trek starts from Marrakech and continues to Imlil. Day 1 follows the route over Tizi Mzik Pass to Azib Tamsoult Refuge. Day 2 crosses Tizi n’Auguelzim Pass before reaching the Toubkal Refuge. Day 3 is the summit day, followed by the descent to Imlil and transfer back to Marrakech.

How long is the summit day?

The final day is the longest, with approximately 10 hours of walking, followed by around 1.5 hours of driving back to Marrakech. The day begins early with the climb from the refuge to the Toubkal summit, followed by the descent to Imlil.

Where do we sleep during the Toubkal Ascent?

You spend the first night at Azib Tamsoult Refuge and the second night at the Toubkal Refuge, at approximately 3,207m. This allows you to progressively gain altitude before attempting the summit.

Do I need previous mountaineering experience to climb Toubkal?

The ascent is not presented as a technical mountaineering climb, but it requires good physical fitness and preparation for high-altitude hiking. The upper section can be difficult because of loose scree and altitude. A professional licensed guide is included with the trek.
