The trailhead is at Imi Oughlad, situated at approximately 1,450 metres. Here, you will meet your local Berber mountain team and muleteers before setting off on foot.
The first section of the trek is a gentle acclimatization hike along winding mule tracks. The trail climbs through agricultural terraces and fragrant pine and juniper woodland towards Tizi n’Tachte, at around 2,000 metres.
From the pass, pause to admire the panoramic views across the Imlil and Aït Ouaouazaden valleys before continuing towards Imi n’Ifri, where you will enjoy a picnic lunch surrounded by the peaceful mountain landscape.
In the afternoon, descend gradually along mountain tracks towards the Aït Ouaouazaden Valley. The route eventually brings you to the traditional red-earth Berber village of Tiziane, at approximately 1,750 metres.
Settle into a local Berber house and enjoy a traditional dinner while experiencing the warm hospitality and peaceful atmosphere of village life in the High Atlas.
Trekking: Approximately 5–6 hours
Accommodation: Traditional Berber house
After breakfast, continue your journey through the beautiful Aït Ouaouazaden Valley. The trail follows the valley through fragrant walnut groves and traditional agricultural landscapes before gradually climbing towards Tizi n’Taghrhourte, at approximately 1,995 metres.
Beyond the pass, the landscape opens into a quieter, more spacious section of the trail.
Continue towards Assaka Spring, where you will stop for a picnic and enjoy the remarkable tranquillity of the surrounding mountains.
After lunch, the trail descends gradually along the edge of the forest. Continue through the mountain landscape until reaching the Berber village of D’knt, also known as Agouns n’Assoul, at around 1,870 metres.
Here, your mountain team will prepare dinner before you spend the night in a traditional bivouac beneath the clear High Atlas skies.
Trekking: Approximately 5–6 hours
Accommodation: Mountain bivouac
After breakfast, begin the day’s trek with a steady climb through groves of walnut trees and fields of corn and barley.
Along the trail, you may encounter local shepherds with their flocks, as well as villagers going about their daily work. These encounters offer a genuine glimpse into traditional mountain life, where agriculture and pastoral traditions continue to shape the rhythm of everyday life.
Continue towards Tizi n’Tagdalte, crossing the mountain pass before beginning the descent through stands of juniper trees. Reach a small natural spring nestled among the trees, where you will stop for a picnic and a well-earned rest. After lunch, continue along winding mountain paths following the upper slopes of the valley.
The trail eventually reaches a small river at the entrance to the Aït Ouaouazaden Valley.
From here, continue to the traditional village of Tizi Oussem, situated at approximately 1,850 metres, before climbing towards the summer settlement of Tamsoult, where your mountain camp awaits.
Enjoy dinner surrounded by the peaceful mountain landscape and prepare for the higher-altitude trekking ahead.

After breakfast, set out eastwards on a challenging mountain trail towards Tizi Aguelzim, one of the highest passes on the route.
The ascent follows winding mule tracks through increasingly rugged terrain as the landscape gradually transforms from green mountain valleys into the rocky environment of the High Atlas highlands.
Reaching Tizi Aguelzim at approximately 3,550 metres is a rewarding moment, with spectacular views across the surrounding peaks and valleys. From the pass, descend and continue south-east towards the Toubkal Refuge, situated at approximately 3,207 metres. The dramatic change in scenery and increasing altitude make this a memorable stage of the trek.
Upon arrival at the refuge, settle in and enjoy a well-earned dinner. Take the evening to rest and prepare for the following day’s summit attempt.
Trekking: Approximately 6–7 hours
Accommodation: Toubkal Refuge / mountain camp
Today is the highlight of your High Atlas adventure: the ascent of Mount Toubkal, rising to 4,167 metres and standing as the highest peak in North Africa.
After an early breakfast, set out at around 6:00 am for the summit. The trail climbs steeply through the rugged upper slopes of the mountain, requiring a steady pace as you gain altitude.
After approximately three hours of climbing, reach the summit of Jbel Toubkal at 4,167 metres. From the highest point in North Africa, enjoy breathtaking panoramic views across the High Atlas and the vast landscapes of southern Morocco.
Take time to celebrate your achievement and appreciate the extraordinary mountain panorama before beginning the descent via the Ikkhibi Sud, or South Cirque.
Descend with your guide towards the Toubkal Refuge, where you will stop for a well-earned picnic lunch.
After lunch, continue downhill along steep, zigzagging trails towards Sidi Chamarouch, one of the most distinctive landmarks on the Toubkal route. Set beside a waterfall, this historic mountain settlement is known for its religious shrine and has long been an important pilgrimage site.
From Sidi Chamarouch, continue your descent through the Aït Mizane Valley towards Imlil, the principal starting point for many Mount Toubkal treks.
Once you arrive in Imlil, meet your vehicle for the return journey to Marrakech. Your five-day High Atlas trekking adventure concludes with your arrival in the vibrant Red City, bringing to an end an unforgettable journey through traditional Berber villages, remote mountain valleys and the summit of North Africa’s highest peak.
