Our 4 day Toubkal trek starts with an acclimatisation hike to the Tizi Mzik pass (2,489m) and a night back in Imlil, so your body has time to adjust to the altitude before you head up to the Toubkal Refuge. This carefully paced adventure combines breathtaking mountain scenery, traditional Berber villages and the challenge of reaching the summit of Mount Toubkal at 4,167 metres, the highest peak in Morocco and North Africa.

Your trek begins with a transfer from Marrakech to Imlil, where you'll enjoy an acclimatization hike to Tizi Mzik Pass at 2,489m before returning to Imlil for the night. The following day, trek through the beautiful Aït Mizane Valley, passing Aremd village and the famous Sidi Chamarouch shrine before continuing to the Toubkal Refuge at around 3,207m.

Day 3 is the highlight of the adventure: an early morning ascent of Mount Toubkal. After reaching the summit, enjoy spectacular panoramic views across the High Atlas, Marrakech Plain, Anti-Atlas and, on clear days, towards the Sahara before descending back to the refuge.

On the final day, descend through the Aït Mizane Valley to Imlil, enjoy lunch, and then return to Marrakech.

With an acclimatization day and a dedicated summit day, this 4-day Toubkal Trek offers more time to experience the mountains while allowing you to enjoy the journey as well as the summit.

Tour Plan

Day 1: Marrakech – Imlil (1,740m) – Tizi Mzik Pass (2,489m) – Imlil

Your Mount Toubkal Trej begins with a morning pick-up from your hotel in Marrakech at around 8:30 am. From the city, travel towards the spectacular High Atlas Mountains and the village of Imlil, located at 1,740 metres.

Upon arrival, you will meet your local mountain guide and check in at your traditional guesthouse. After some time to prepare, begin your first acclimatization hike towards Tizi Mzik Pass, rising to 2,489 metres.

The trail takes you through the beautiful mountain landscapes surrounding Imlil, with panoramic views opening across the valleys and Berber villages as you gain altitude. At the pass, enjoy a freshly prepared lunch surrounded by the impressive peaks of the High Atlas.

After lunch and some time to relax and appreciate the scenery, descend along the same trail back to Imlil. Settle into your guesthouse and enjoy a relaxing evening in the mountains, preparing for the higher altitudes of the following days.

Driving: Approximately 1.5 hours
Trekking: Approximately 4 hours
Overnight: Guesthouse in Imlil
Meals: Lunch & dinner

Day 2: Imlil (1,740m) – Aremd – Sidi Chamarouch – Toubkal Refuge (3,207m)

After breakfast, begin your ascent through the spectacular Aït Mizane Valley, following the trail towards the village of Aremd.

Aremd is the largest village in the valley and offers a fascinating glimpse into traditional Berber mountain life. Terraced fields, traditional homes and narrow paths create a distinctive landscape where agriculture has been adapted to the rugged terrain. For generations, local communities have cultivated crops such as corn, potatoes and walnuts in these high mountain valleys.

From Aremd, continue eastwards across the valley before gradually climbing along ancient mule tracks into the higher mountain terrain. The landscape becomes increasingly rugged as you follow the trail towards Sidi Chamarouch, one of the best-known stops on the Toubkal route.

Set beside a small waterfall and surrounded by dramatic cliffs, Sidi Chamarouch is a traditional pilgrimage site and a popular stopping point for trekkers. Take some time here to rest and enjoy the atmosphere before continuing higher into the mountains.

From Sidi Chamarouch, the trail climbs steadily through increasingly dramatic scenery, zigzagging towards the Toubkal Refuge at 3,207 metres.

Upon arrival, settle into the refuge, enjoy dinner and rest for the night in preparation for your summit attempt the following morning.

Trekking: Approximately 5–6 hours
Overnight: Toubkal Refuge (3,207m)
Meals: Breakfast, lunch & dinner

Day 3: Toubkal Refuge (3,207m) – Mount Toubkal Summit (4,167m) – Toubkal Refuge

Today is the highlight of your trek: the ascent of Mount Toubkal, reaching 4,167 metres and standing as the highest peak in North Africa.

After an early breakfast, set out from the refuge and begin climbing towards the mountain’s southern slopes. The trail crosses a stream before entering the rugged upper terrain, where rocky slopes and scree fields make the ascent more challenging.

The altitude and loose terrain require a steady pace, but the spectacular mountain scenery provides plenty of motivation along the way. As you climb higher, the views become increasingly expansive, with the High Atlas stretching out in every direction.

After reaching the ridgeline, continue towards the summit plateau. From here, the final section leads to the summit of Jbel Toubkal at 4,167 metres.

Take time at the summit to celebrate your achievement and enjoy the extraordinary panorama. On clear days, you can look across the Marrakech Plain and the High Atlas to the north, while views towards the Anti-Atlas and the vast landscapes of southern Morocco extend to the south.

After enjoying the summit, begin your descent along the same route back towards the refuge. Once back at the base camp, enjoy a well-deserved lunch before spending the remainder of the afternoon relaxing and taking in the surrounding mountain scenery.

Trekking: Approximately 5–7 hours
Overnight: Toubkal Refuge (3,207m)
Meals: Breakfast, lunch & dinner

Day 4: Toubkal Refuge (3,207m) – Imlil (1,740m) – Marrakech

After breakfast at the refuge, begin your final descent through the Aït Mizane Valley, following the mountain trail back towards Imlil.

As you descend, enjoy a final opportunity to appreciate the landscapes of the High Atlas and the traditional villages scattered throughout the valley. The descent offers a different perspective of the route you travelled during your ascent.

Upon reaching Imlil, enjoy a well-earned lunch at a local mountain lodge and take some time to relax before meeting your driver for the journey back to Marrakech.

Your four-day Mount Toubkal trekking adventure concludes with a comfortable transfer back to Marrakech, marking the end of an unforgettable

journey through the High Atlas Mountains and to the summit of North Africa’s highest peak.

Frequently asked questions

Why choose the 4-day Toubkal Trek?

The 4-day itinerary gives you more time to acclimatize before reaching the summit. It includes an acclimatization hike to Tizi Mzik on Day 1, followed by the trek to the Toubkal Refuge and a dedicated summit day.

Is the first day an acclimatization day?

Yes. After arriving in Imlil, you hike to Tizi Mzik Pass at 2,489m before returning to Imlil for the night. This provides an opportunity to gain some altitude before heading toward the Toubkal Refuge.

Where do we stay on the first night?

The first night is spent at a guesthouse in Imlil, rather than at the mountain refuge.

How high is Tizi Mzik Pass?

Tizi Mzik Pass is approximately 2,489 metres above sea level.

How long is the Day 1 hike?

The acclimatization hike takes approximately 4 hours, in addition to the roughly 1.5-hour drive from Marrakech to Imlil.

Do we return to Imlil after the Tizi Mzik hike?

Yes. After lunch at Tizi Mzik, you descend via the same route and spend the night at your lodge in Imlil.

Does the 4-day trek provide better acclimatization than the shorter treks?

The itinerary includes a dedicated acclimatization hike on the first day, followed by a gradual ascent toward the refuge on Day 2. This makes the schedule less compressed than an itinerary that starts the high-altitude approach immediately.

What happens on Day 2 of the trek?

You leave Imlil and hike through the Ait Mizane Valley toward Aremd, continue to Sidi Chamarouch, and then ascend to the Toubkal Refuge at approximately 3,206–3,207m. The hike takes around 5–6 hours.

Do we visit Aremd village?

Yes. Aremd is one of the villages visited on the route from Imlil toward the Toubkal Refuge.

Can non-Muslims visit the Sidi Chamarouch shrine?

The page explains that visitors can reach the area, but only Muslims are permitted to cross the stone bridge to visit the marabout shrine itself.

How long do we stay at the Toubkal Refuge?

You spend two nights at the Toubkal Refuge—the second and third nights of the itinerary.

What altitude is the Toubkal Refuge?

The refuge is approximately 3,207 metres above sea level.

How long does the summit day take?

Day 3 involves approximately 5–7 hours of walking, including the ascent to Mount Toubkal and the descent back to the refuge.

What makes the summit day challenging?

Although the walking itself is described as relatively straightforward, the altitude and scree terrain can make parts of the ascent difficult. The route includes sections with loose rocks and boulders.

Do we return to the refuge after reaching the summit?

Yes. After reaching the summit and taking a short break, you descend via the same route to the refuge, where lunch and the overnight stay are provided.

What altitude does the trek reach?

The summit of Mount Toubkal is approximately 4,167 metres above sea level.

What can I see from the summit?

The page describes views across the Marrakech Plain, the High Atlas, the Anti-Atlas and toward the Sahara.

Is Day 4 mainly a descent?

Yes. Day 4 is dedicated to descending from the refuge to Imlil via the same route, followed by lunch in Imlil and the transfer back to Marrakech.

How long is the final descent?

The walk from the refuge to Imlil takes approximately 4–5 hours, followed by around 1.5 hours by vehicle to Marrakech.

What time does the Marrakech transfer start?

The detailed itinerary states that pickup from the hotel in Marrakech is at approximately 8:30 AM on Day 1.

Is lunch included during the trek?

Yes. Lunches are listed among the inclusions, and the itinerary specifically mentions lunch prepared by a cook on Day 1 and lunch at the refuge after the summit on Day 3.

Is breakfast included in the 4-day trek?

There is an inconsistency on the page: breakfast is mentioned in the Day 2 and Day 3 itineraries, but “Breakfast” is also listed under “Not Included.” This should be clarified with the operator before publishing a definitive FAQ answer.

Is accommodation included?

Yes. Accommodation is listed among the tour inclusions. The itinerary specifies a guesthouse in Imlil and accommodation at the Toubkal Refuge.

Is a mule included for luggage?

Yes. A mule for luggage is included in the package.

Do I need to carry all my luggage myself?

No. The tour includes a mule for luggage, so your main luggage can be transported while you hike.

Is transportation from Marrakech to Imlil included?

Yes. Transportation is included, including the transfer between Marrakech and Imlil.

Is the airport transfer included?

No. Airport transfers are specifically listed among the exclusions.

Is a sleeping bag provided?

No. Sleeping bags are listed under Not Included, so trekkers should bring one or ask the operator about rental options.

Is mineral water included?

No. Mineral water is listed among the exclusions.

What should I wear for the 4-day trek?

The recommended dress code is comfortable athletic clothing, hiking shoes, a hat and a warm jacket.

Is the 4-day Toubkal Trek a private tour?

Yes. The company states that its Toubkal treks are private and operated by professional licensed guides, cooks and muleteers.

How much does the 4-day Toubkal Trek cost?

The page displays a headline price of £320 per person, but its group pricing section gives different rates depending on group size: £390 for 2 people, £370 for 3, £350 for 4–7, £330 for 8–12, and £300 for 13–16 people. I would therefore use the group pricing rather than quoting £320 as a universal price.

Is the 4-day trek suitable for people concerned about altitude?

The itinerary is designed with an initial acclimatization hike and a gradual progression from Imlil to the refuge before the summit attempt. However, reaching 4,167m is still physically demanding, and the guide should make the final safety decisions based on conditions and the trekker's situation.

What is the biggest advantage of the 4-day itinerary?

The main advantage is the more gradual progression: you start with an acclimatization hike to Tizi Mzik, sleep in Imlil, then ascend to the refuge, spend a dedicated day attempting the summit, and finally descend to Marrakech.
